Most appliances can run on 20% hydrogen and 80% natural. The pipes in the road need changing to plastic (many have already been done).

So 20% reduction in emissions possible fairly easily.

plenty of challenges that would push up gas costs

But compared to changing every gas boiler in the UK to electric and supplying them with power many of them are fixable.

I'm not sure leakage via quantum tunneling is a real issue but it would make sense it will leak far more easily due to the tiny molecular size, through 'holes' that we'd consider impermeable for other gases.

On the flip side, hydrogen is so light that if it leaks it doesn't hang around long if there's the slightest chance to dissipate.

I was doing a search for combi heat pumps and Worcester now do them. They've basically just incorporated a hot water cylinder within the units themselves.

I can't get over the price of heat pumps in general though. Even the smallest ones are over £6k.

To replace our 21kW oil boiler I reckon we'd need the largest size (11kW) which are £9k. And that doesn't include the cost of the pipework, ground works or installation. I bet we wouldn't have much change from £15k.

Looking at the service manual for them, they are very complicated ie. lots to go wrong.

          -----------------------------------------

Sorry Earth but we'll be sticking with oil for a while yet.

I did contemplate a ground source heat pump and covering the garden with solar panels to get the best of both worlds.

Then I had a lie down in darkened room & the idea went away.

The best solution for most people will be to emigrate somewhere with a better climate. Now, what do we need to do to get free movement of UK citizens to warmer places that are not too far away?

Yep, and much cheaper houses too.

I can't really get on board with solar if there's no decent feed-in tariff. If you drew graphs of "how much solar I'm harvesting" overlaid with "how much energy I'm using" I reckon they'd be pretty much out of phase. Storage hasn't really been cracked... sure I can heat a tank of water.

Houses are much cheaper in other countries already

storage heaters, charging cars and of course Powerwall.

You shouldn't be exporting electricity just getting the money.
