    Football Super League

Maybe the fact there is no thread on this speaks volumes .... or is it only me that couldn't give 2 flying hoots?

It's funny that Bojo and pals are trying to make it political, to win votes, but really should the government be anywhere near this? These are businesses at the end of the day. They need to make money. Why is this all so bad ... apart from football fans think they own the clubs they support - they don't.

Which makes it hilarious as the voters in 'Red Wall' seats might have something to say about this.

Just wait until they hear the Tory's 'survival of the fittest' mantra rear its head...

It's been moneyball for a very long time.
Scoots still says that Apr 2020 didn't mark the start of a new stock bull market.

Early to mid eighties Division One footballers probably got paid less than top IT contractors.

Footballer pay has gone up about 50x since then. IT contractors around 5x.

Exactly. So why are people surprised/upset? Love the irony that UEFA and the English Premier League are claiming it's only about money

They are a lot more professional now than they were back then (I'm not talking IT contractors ).

Just compare any modern premier league footballer to the likes of Jan Molby

Football has become big business. Some businesses are more successful than others. Some will go bust, some will make billions. Problem is football fans think they own the clubs - they do not.

The government can stop it if they want.

I can see it all falling through though.

There was some chap on the radio earlier talking about it from a player perspective. He had a good point - there's all this talk of banning players from playing for their national teams but it's the club's decision to take part in the super league, not the players', so it's unfair to penalise them for a decision they've had no part in. They are under contract to the club and can't not play for them or else they'll be in breach of contract.

It looks to me like it's more connected to the debt being accumulated at the top end of certain countries leagues.

When Sky started to 'own' English football and the clubs in the EPL started receiving ridiculous amounts of money per season, that should have been enough to secure clubs for generations. Instead, the top clubs sought further 'investment'[ from new owners etc. The money Chelski and Man City have buried into their teams will never be recovered and the champions league income doesn't now even knock a dent into the accumulated debt. It's just another way for the owners of massive debt ridden top teams to try to claw back some of the money they've spunked down the drain by paying guys 1/2 million a week in search of 'success'. If it's not this proposal, it'll be another one in a year or two's time.

Can they stop it? I wouldn't think under current legislation that they can, but they could write some new draconian laws ... now wouldn't that be nice?

But the real question is, should they stop it? What right does the government have to create a law to stop businesses operating legally within their sector? It would be the short end of the wedge if any government tried to stop this.

UEFA and EPL only want to stop it as they will lose revenue, so it's their own greed that is triggering them.

Don't watch football personally but this is all very interesting. It's pretty clear that most football clubs are not viable. If we had another business sector where the majority only exist because a tiny minority at the top effectively subsidized them we'd not be questioning a move like this, we'd say it's survival of the fittest. So what makes football so special?

Why shouldn't small clubs go under, or at the very least operate within their means? Why do we need 90 (not sure on exact number and can't be @rsed to check) professional football teams in England (plus the 2 in Scotland )?
