Although it must be pretty large, the event horizon may not be the entire dark part in the middle: The inner part of the accretion ring is so hot it doesn't show up in visible light.

I believe the image is taken by radio telescopes - however, assuming this is black body radiation, while the peak of a extremely hot object may be in the hard x-rays, it will be glowing very brightly at all lower frequencies as well.

The red light from an object glowing yellow hot is brighter than the red light of an object glowing red hot.
