Well we certainly have a reason to sleep with a gun under the pillow. Bringing troops and assets home would be a smart move if we wanted to be in a better position to defend ourselves.

        NATO, Five Power etc.

Don't forget that we needed a ground attack aircraft to replace Tornado and Harrier. Before anyone mentions Typhoon, it's crap at low-level, way too thirsty.

Neither is it the strong point of at least one of our media outlets:

          BBC: £92million each
          Sun: £150million each
Guardian: £189million each (£9.1bn/48), or £150million for planes + support
          Star: £120million (headline), £150million (photo), £189million each (£9.1bn/48)
          Mail: £100million (headline on 05/06) £120million (headline on 06/06), £150million, £189million each (£9.1bn/48)

A question I'd like to ask is what happened to number 5?
5 left South Carolina and one turned back after refuelling. Have we bought some foreign junk where 20% of it breaks?

But if you've filled it up, why not fly it over?

Dunno. However, refuelled doesn't always mean "filled it up".

Also could be that only 4 were going to make the trip and the 5th was a spare in case of refuelling problems at the first slurp.

No one else has noticed that the planes can't be flown in 'adverse weather conditions'.

"Yeah we can't bomb you today. It's a bit hot/cold/rainy/leaves on the line."
And the lord said unto John; "come forth and receive eternal life." But John came fifth and won a toaster.
