Part of me thinks I'm an eejit for not following all that.

But another part of me thinks "who cares, it's pay day tomorrow and I'm invoicing for the 65th week at my current gig"

    • The meaning of life is to give life meaning
    • Worrying about tomorrow spoils today

You need to read my post for the context - we may have gone a bit off topic!

Is it worth remembering that the 11+ was about IQ and reasoning ability, not arithmetic skills (and certainly not maths...). Stuff you can't actually teach.

And just to go off topic a little, did you read that a teacher has been blamed for none of their pupil getting higher than D in a technology GCSE because she taught the wrong syllabus. Is that a condemnation of the teacher for being utterly inept or a syllabus that is so narrow you can't answer questions you haven't been drilled in?
          Blog? What blog...?

"the 11+" and "grammar school entry exam" aren't necessarily the same thing - some schools require you to pass both

The original question was used by King Edward's School, Birmingham, in their 2011 admission exam, except they have also saved the file as "11+ Maths.pdf"
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

Aha, googled it - so this is the last question on a paper appears to get slightly harder with every question (with calculators not allowed)

Presumably they didn't expect (m)any people to solve it but they want to see what sort of "attempt" you have at it so they can try to see how you think (oxbridge interview style)

If it was true to the original 11+ there would have been no preparation. I would guess these days it's possible to pay a tutor to prep your 10 YO on past papers.

I'm sorry - I was just engaging in a little petty thread sabotage

My step-niece had a huge amount of coaching from a coach who basically sucks up most of the (very few) available places in the county. This is one of the difficulties of a one-off test of ability. Teaching separately to ability is good, but it needs the flexibility to move between "streams" and also to recognise different abilities in different subjects.
