George Osborne says tonight each household in the UK will suffer if Britain votes to quit the European Union on June 23rd.

In 15 years time, outside the EU, the size of the UK's economy will be hit to the extent that every household will be £4,300 poorer than if we vote to keep our membership.

The figure comes from a document which a senior Downing Street official told me earlier was a "thorough assessment" of the risks of leaving.

So is this purely due to trade levies being higher if we left the EU?

So that the goods we buy will cost more?

Given that no one really knows what the economy will be like in 4 years then I will take a gamble that making out we will be worse off in 15 years is absolute bunk.

The simple answer is that nobody can know for certain what will happen.

If the government in place cannot adapt to the changes if we vote to exit then it should be replaced by one that can.

The Telegraph leaders are busy promoting Brexit today. I particularly like Charles Moore's take The EU oligarchs will despise us even more if we Leave. That's reason enough

We are supposed, in the 20th century, to have put aside deference voting, yet, in the 21st, we will have voted Remain out of deference – not because we really wanted to, but because David Cameron, George Osborne, Jeremy Corbyn, Peter Mandelson, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, the CBI, the big trade unions, the university vice-chancellors, famous scientists in receipt of EU grants, the Governor of the Bank of England, the IMF, Angela Merkel, François Hollande, Jean-Claude Juncker, most top-rate taxpayers, quite possibly Pope Francis and – this week – the President of the United States of America told us we must.

Why should we be impressed or surprised that the above think as they do? If there is one thing the EU is good at, it is providing career opportunities, summit meetings, conference circuits and pensions for administrative and political elites. Its fiercer critics say it is a dictatorship. They are wrong: if it were, its evil would be in plain view and we could get rid of it by getting rid of the dictator. No, the EU is an oligarchy – a form of permanent, supranational government by a relatively small mutual support group of highly educated people which has worked out how to stay in power without the boring task of submitting itself to general elections.

I suppose one good thing about Prime Minister Boris is that he's likely to have a good relationship with President Trump, what with going to the same barber.

Farage only has a political career because of telling people the lies they want to hear about the EU. Boris clearly sees the referendum as a way into number ten, or surely he'd be backing the government. And you claim Obama, the IMF, the CBI, lots of economists etc. etc. are only saying what they say for self-interest?

Why else would they say or believe it? This whole debate is about the establishment cementing its power. If you really think people who hold the wealth and power that they do get where they are by being driven by the common good you are an idiot (sorry more of one than we originally thought you are). The rule is the more successful someone is the more they are driven by self interest.

It is not as if they are ever right either as Boris says in the Telegraph

We have heard from the IMF (which got the Asian crisis completely wrong), as well as the banks and the CBI, all of whom were wrong about the euro. Davos man – the kind of people whose club-class air tickets are paid by the taxpayer, all the lobbyists and corporate affairs directors of the big companies: they are all increasingly nervous that they have been rumbled, that people can see the emperor has no clothes and that Britain could have a glorious future outside the EU.
