How is the segregation in Northern Ireland, or Israel and Palestine helping things? Thanks to separate schools they learn to hate each other at an early age, whereas if you just stick young kids together from different sides they'd all play with each other and grow up thinking the decades of hatred was a bit daft. I know it all sounds a bit like we should all hold hands and sing Kum Ba Yah,but people can and do live side by side perfectly peacefully all over the world. It's where they start being divided according to race or culture, often by their own choice, that the problems start.

Labelling and dividing everyone according to centuries old divisions that shouldn't matter in the modern world is exactly what IS want.

Here's what some actual Syrians think (not that anybody bothered to ask them beforehand)

I agree. You are misunderstanding what I was saying. Segregation within a society (exactly what our current idea of multiculturalism is encouraging) is a bad idea. As most contractors will know from their jobs, when you are interacting with others of whatever race or religion, it is positive and makes you see them as fellow human beings and cultural differences seem much less important. However, when you have groups living in close proximity with little contact, when our views of the other groups are mostly formed from headline news which tends to be very negative, that is when tensions arise. What I am saying is that, if we are unable to interact with each other because of serious differences, it is far better that we live in our own self-determining nations, where we can have the societies that we want without imposing our views on others of very different beliefs.

We also need to avoid imposing our own ideals on other nations and have effective organisations, like the UN, that can resolve tensions that do arise. In a world of global trade, where trade sanctions can really bite, the sort of national conflicts that we have had in the past should be rather less likely.

Who was it who once said that war is the show business end of politics?

They've been chomping at the bit since they lost the vote in 2013.

Except back then the enemy was Eurasia, and now it's Eastasia.

Correction. The enemy in 2013 was Eastasia. The enemy has always been Eastasia. Eurasia has always been our ally

              Hmmm...

British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Sunday that Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin's decision to take military action in Syria to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was a "terrible mistake".

Lose-lose situation. Condemned whether you conform and bomb and as a result radicalize onlooking susceptible muzzers from the rest of the world or stand back and let IS increase in power/consolidate their caliphate.

The simple option seems to be boots on the ground - remove their territory and there is no caliphate and no concept of an IS. Is it really that simple though? I doubt it. With IS gone, you're then back to Russian-backed Assad vs any Syrian that's not with Assad.
