As much as Obama is a scumbag, that article seems idiotic to me. The fact of the matter is that, besides any other reasons, those wars (lets say the first) were largely waged by younger sons who didn't stand to inherit a kingdom - so they jumped at the chance to establish their own kingdoms in Palestine & Anatolia. The first crusades was sanctioned with the express intention of restoring access to the holy places to christian pilgrims.

The plebs killed for absolution from their sins, and the nobility killed for conquest and power - in the name of the papacy.

What the muslims were doing is largely besides the point.
