As much as Obama is a scumbag, that article seems idiotic to me. The fact of the matter is that, besides any other reasons, those wars (lets say the first) were largely waged by younger sons who didn't stand to inherit a kingdom - so they jumped at the chance to establish their own kingdoms in Palestine & Anatolia.
