Which in a good number of cases, sadly, is true!

Only because onshoring has kept wages so low that people escape to other things..

Rough combined experience with the firm about 60-70 years.
          ...
Probably 2-3 of them have marketable / relevant IT skills.
Deadwood. I don't want to say that they deserves it, but you reap what you sow.

And the new director will be on-shoring because the off-shoring deal will have turned out more expensive and producing a lower quality service.

who would have thought that changing the model from having people working for the company and sharing the companies goals to outsourcing the service to a company whose sole interest is making as much money as possible out of the contract would have had that impact....

When I hear quotes like ' dead wood ' I think 'I hope you get outsourced and fired '. And I hope as many outsourced projects go tits up as possible

Saying job "security is a myth" is a little disingenuous though. Sure, you don't have absolute security but you'd be a very unlucky (or useless) permie to end up with your average employment duration being under 3 years, not including cases where you quit. I don't know how long the average contract stint is - maybe a year? - but a contractor expects to find a new gig about once a year whereas a permie wouldn't. You will get unlucky sometimes and laid off, but on average you will still get much longer stints.
