Best strategy for getting a contract?

I thought contract roles are always urgent to fill...

Used to be back in the day, now it's all waiting for badge access, waiting for laptop, waiting for logins, mandatory courses........

A large proportion of these 'roles' are HR justifying their existence by going through the motions with a non-existent role.....

It depends on the market that you are looking to work in. If there are only five roles a week coming available, and there are only a handful of people that can do them, then you would expect to be getting interviews. If there are only five roles a week and there are a thousand applications, then you need to make sure you are one of the fifteen people that are likely to get picked.

Five a week sounds pretty low to me, but others may well differ.

Saying that when I had my eye on the market in Jan/Feb there were certainly not that many to apply for. To be fair I had filtered out London so guess it depends on how narrow the OP's location focus is.

Jobserve gives me 633 contract roles in the UK, in IT, listed today.

If they are listing over 600 jobs each day that you can do, and you are only applying for five a week, then I suspect you may need to be trying harder to find a role.

I presume that's not actually on your CV?
