      No, it sounds low to me too, 5 a day should be the norm if the contracts are out there.

        Saying that when I had my eye on the market in Jan/Feb there were certainly not that many to apply for. To be fair I had filtered out London so guess it depends on how narrow the OP's location focus is.

                    Jobserve gives me 633 contract roles in the UK, in IT, listed today.

                    If they are listing over 600 jobs each day that you can do, and you are only applying for five a week, then I suspect you may need to be trying harder to find a role.
