I've been looking at contractors for a while, and recently went into contracting my self. I South East and London most rates start at £300 going upto £550. However, it seems on the forum people are at much higher rates at £700+. I saw only a handful 6 weeks to 3 months offering £650 in financial trading mainly. I looked on indeed, jobserve, and a dozen other search but can't seem to find "plenty" of jobs a high rates. Where do you guys find such work from? What tech stack and sub-industry is the work in at that level?

I doubt most contractors are earning £700+. Not quite sure where you got that idea from. I suspect there are more earning < £300 than > £700.Originally posted by mykash View PostI've been looking at contractors for a while, and recently went into contracting my self. What you can expect depends upon your skills, industry and location. -

I don't know where you got that impression from but most are NOT on higher rates of £700+ pd? There will be a few on those rates of course but they will be financial trading, senior Enterprise Architects, senior PM roles or Business Change. And they won't be found on Jobserve.
Your research is correct, your impression of this forum isn't."I can put any old tat in my sig, put quotes around it and attribute to someone of whom I've heard, to make it sound true."

Alas there is quite alot of nonsense talked on here.
And whenever I have been asked my rate in a poll I always lie. Either incredibly high or incredibly low.
Remember that employers play the same trick. I was once told by a manager that if he accepted my rate I would be the highest paid contractor in his team - he had 30 employees, 10 contractors. I held firm - when I arrived I discovered the contractor sitting next to me earned more!
And one final thing, there is one person on here who pretends to be a jet setter. Posts some very convincing stuff to back it up. He is actually on benefits. But we all feel very sorry for him and so put up with his dilussions.
Good luck!Comment

I've had quite a few at £550+ but never £700. They mostly come from people I know and / or clients I have had before and are getting harder to find. Someone I know did once ask if I would be interested in a £900/day job, but they were expecting >70hr/wk and I would like to live to retirement.
If you do a filter on daily rate on JS you will see the ones advertised, but they are few and far between and usually reserved for ex-Directors of companies similar to the end client.Comment

I would take a stab (and I have no empirical evidence to back this up) that an overwhelming majority of contractors on here are on a daily rate between £200 and £500.Comment

+1 to that. I can't remember anyone saying even close to that.Originally posted by cojak View PostWhich forum?.

I would have thought any contract that might attract daily rates approaching four figures would involve them coming to you rather than the other way round.Comment

Or in my area which is none of those, thank heavensOriginally posted by cojak View PostI don't know where you got that impression from but most are NOT on higher rates of £700+ pd?
