I have not really noticed many people claiming to have a day rate higher than 700, I certainly don't.

I went for one once which had a rate of £1200 a day but I did not even get a callback. I was not suprised as I did not have some of the skills required but I thought it was worth a chance!

On that one you have to go to the end of page 4 to find the first proper developer role (other than niche languages - I saw Lisp).

I don't know where you got that impression from but most are NOT on higher rates of £700+ pd? There will be a few on those rates of course but they will be financial trading, senior Enterprise Architects, senior PM roles or Business Change. And they won't be found on Jobserve.

Your research is correct, your impression of this forum isn't.
Finance (or perhaps more accurately) investment banking is generally where most of the really high rates appear to be. But you have to be quite senior in any company to be at even £700/day with a high level of responsibility in terms of budget/headcount etc. Many of the higher paid roles are also broader in scope i.e. European or global level of responsibility.

I can only speak for London and the South East, but I'd guess that some of the higher paid roles in large companies at £700/day plus are:

                    IT Director/CIO level £900-1300/day.
Other Leadership Team member/Head of Function 700-1000
                    Senior Programme Manager - £700-1100

Certain skill sets are very much in demand e.g. Enterprise Architects. Where I worked in the last few years, many of the architects were on at least 650-750. One Head of Architecture was rumoured to be on £1000-1300/day.

Some people seem to knock Jobserve but I've found it's worked for me when I've looked at roles at up to £700. Having said that, I think many roles above that level will be handled by headhunter/search firms who already have a database of senior level candidates who can work at that level and are less likely to use the typical job boards.
