    New trend?

I've started seeing this quite frequency recently in job specs "The ideal candidate will live within a daily commutable distance of.........."

Say what!? Since when has this been important in a job spec? Yes, I know they may want you to be at their beck and call, and even that seems like strong direction and control.

It is bordering on a new kind of discrimination, discriminating against candidates who arent local or within the 'commutable distance.'

    Any others seeing this more?
I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

IMO this is fall out from so many people being made redundant and taking contracts as it is easier to find than a full time role. The lines between a professional contractor to whom distance doesn't matter and raft of Fri-Mon contractors that ask about travelling time and are bothered about distance are merging.

Can't say I've noticed this yet, but I've not exactly been scouring the job market lately (though I have noticed a dearth of Daily Job Alerts which is concerning).

I 'd be pretty unhappy if I saw this. I'm happy to travel for the role, and most places are commutable for me for the right daily rate. Of course living in London means the chances of this adversely affecting me are slim, but nevertheless, that seems pretty silly that they might potentially rule out better candidates on the basis that some candidates (qualified, but not as good) live closer.

Still, if any clients/agents take that approach, that's down to them and you're better off out of it.

Similarly, I saw a job I was perfectly suited for a few months ago, but it said in no uncertain terms that only candidates with degrees would be considered. Fair enough, their loss.

I saw one in the last week or so and it said you needed this. It went on to say due to being oncall you had to stay at the weekend too. If I see it again I'll post the link.

I've had this quite a bit at the start of the year, even turned down for one role as I was deemed to live too far to commute to the client location (didn't bother me otherwise I wouldn't have applied for the gig)

When I questioned it the pimp then changed response saying the client had rejected me on other grounds

Since I stopped putting where I live on my CV, I tend to get asked and at that point make it known I'm happy to commute and not to discriminate me on them grounds (goes down like a lead balloon but they get my point).

Yes, and it's an unwritten admission that the rate is absolutely carp.

I had one yesterday for a 3 month FTC £30K pro rata!

You're going to need to do more than that, I had a well dodgy one that I linked, which they then changed.

Do a screen capture and upload it to Flickr 1st.

                Are these pizza delivery roles?

Seriously though, maybe these kinds of requirements are a reaction to people applying for non-commutable jobs, then providing businesses endless hassle with being late for work or wanting to work from home etc?

No, this has just started happening. A non-commutable contract just means that you have to live out of a suitcase Mon-Fri.

It really has got to do with contract rate or ex-permies.

Maybe that's what happened. I had a feeling it was with Santander in MK. When I searched again none of this info is on their current postings so perhaps it was them and they've removed the offensive bits.
