My present assignment is the first I've had on a day rate. I travel Monday and Friday so my hours tend to be skewed towards more mid week but are typically-

    Mon 6 to 8 hours.
Tue, Wed, Thu 8 to 12 hours.
    Fri 4 hours.

I just make sure I do what is required and I am available by phone Friday afternoons while traveling home if required. Works OK for me so far.

Been doing that for years. LAst gig was 10:30 start Monday and 15:00 finish Friday, 8:00 start the rest o fthe week and usually finishing around 18:30.

On the other hand, my real working week started at 06:00 Monday and finished by about 20:00 Friday, which is 110 hours. So what's the problem, exactly?
      Blog? What blog...?

Obviously impressed that you had to say it twice.

where i work they conveniently missed out the working hours in the interview. I don't think you will find worse working hours anywhere:

9-6 with 30 mins lunch break. Overtime unpaid and they treat their perm staff like sh*t. I have not seen or heard of a place with a worse staff turn around.

I just paid to get my CV done professionally and am going to try my best to switch to somewhere with reasonable working hours.

I had roles like this. Used to travel up to Newcastle upon Tyne Monday mornings, leave home around 7am and arrive in the office 10.30 ish. They were happy for me to get there as late as 12 without querying where I was. Never took up this option though. Work to about 4.30pm then get to my gaff I was renting. Rest of the week was in work before 8am, work to about 5ish then on Friday, leave for home around 2.30pm.

Did that with 3 different clients in the north east too (2 utility companies, one financial).
I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

This isn't extreme, it is just plain stupid. Working 36 hours is ridiculous and bordering on illegal. I am sure everyone was happy that it all got sorted but HR find out this type of thing goes on they will go ballistic. You faint on the job after 30 hours and injure yourself H&S will be all over it like a rash. Nothing clever about this in any situation... unless of course it is just all BS.

when I started at my current place I was told it was 08:30 to 5pm every day and no one leaves early.

By 4pm on the Friday all contractors had gone and half the permies too!

Now I do 07:45 to 16:45 most days (2 days are more like 16:15 finish) and on Fridays I do 8-3. The head guy at the start was just trying to impose his authority and bust my balls but as soon as I was trusted I started to shift times myself to suit.

I've also just started to work from home successfully 1 day a week for the last 3 weeks and that makes a huge difference when you have a 4 hour round trip each day!

For me it's all about slowly getting trust and changing it to suit you.
