permies keep asking me my rent

Over the weekend I was strolling in the village and bumped into one of the permies from my current contract. We had a drink. He asked me casually about my rate. I wouldn't answer that. Later on he was asking what my rent is. He was pretty insistent, and eventually I gave him a ballpark idea. It's a pretty modest flat, so I'm not afraid of people getting jealous.

There was also another permie who'd been insistently asking me the same thing. Generally the people on the contract are pretty friendly, but I felt this to be a little intrusive.

How would you feel if permies were asking you questions about money?

Lie. Or tell the truth. There are only 2 options really.

I would do neither, I would politely refuse to discuss such matters.

If the management thought this person should know what I was getting paid they would know. If they dont, its not for me to tell them.

I'd have told them about the rent but refused to discuss the rate. Your contract forbids it and you could get terminated etc.

Ask them in turn about their salary and whether they get free private health insurance and if they're on final salary pension.

That'll shut them up after they've told you to mind your own business..

Order your servants to keep them away from you.

If that doesn't work, some comment along the lines of "Money is such a vulgar topic, isn't it?" might shut them up.

This should have been followed up with 'I'll get the next round', pulling out a £50 note, buying the drinks, telling the barman to keep the change and then saying to said colleague 'Poor chap only earns £10 per hour, I wouldn't get out of bed for less than 10 times that amount'!

Ask what salary they're on, and then look impressed and say "AND you get paid holidays?!"

i usually say that if they are really keen to know then we can go for lunch somewhere away from the office and talk about what contracting is all about.
