Thats interesting as I was thinking the same . I having worked with quite a few of the big consultancies and I know most of them have put a freeze on new hires.
Are you guys running your HR functions on SAP by any chance. Also how did you make transition from ABAP to PM. Interesting as I think that it is the next progression for me but I will miss hands on work a bit. Thanks

SAP opportunities have collapsed, just like the rest of the market. Trying to get into SAP aint gonna save you. Let's leave it at that. Especially if you are outside the EU. Then you're real ****ed if you think you can just walk in here and work for food.

hey turion, not sure you actually read the thread carefully, I have been doing this for 8years and simply commenting on why they are so many false leads in the SAP market. No point in psting replies if you dont read posts

So it's not like an angry future then?

I suppose it is a little bit, yes.

It's a future where the users get to say how their new .net system should look and strangely enough, they want it to look exactly like their old system but with a mouse to move the cursor.

Now that's progress. What a fascinating world we live in.

                  Hi SapGuru,

We do use SAP HR but not for Payroll. Also we have a separate instance for SAP HR so it's not connected to our SAP ERP system.

I moved into the PM arena as a natural progression. I went from abaper to senior abaper to SAP Development Lead and then SAP Technical Lead (same bloody thing!). Then into SAP TPM (technical PM).

I now have almost no visability of development work... I don't even get to work with the development team anymore. The closest I get to abap now is for friendly 'second opinions' now and again.

Which role do I prefer? Well I do miss the hands on developing a lot. I really enjoyed that.

PM work is very different. The level of responsibility is higher, the paperwork side of things is far far higher. The hours are probably more (getting calls from the States out of hours).

On the plus side my rate is marginally better (may be 10-20%). The contracts tend to run for longer. You seem to command more respect from the client ESPECIALLY if you can demonstrate good technical background knowledge above what a normal PM would possess. You seem to be out eating posh nosh at least once a week without having to pick the tab up (free gym membership helps in this respect!).

Is there a true demand out there for SAP skills or is it just a whole lot of hype.
I'm a ABAP / ABAP Objects developer and BI modeller. Currently on highest rates since I began SAP in 1997 (especially when factoring in exchange rates), and have two large contracts for this year

I'm getting fewer calls/emails from agencies than this time last year. Regionally, the drop-off seems to be proportional to the effects that the global crisis is having on the country in question. If you haven't already got at least two years SAP experience, then forget it.
