    Market rates in {insert name of German ERP package we don't mention}

    Ladies & Gents

As previously mentioned I'm looking for a few contractors at the moment. I'm not seeing brilliant CVs but I am seeing exorbitant (sp?) rate requests. Has something exploded in the SAP market or are they just trying it on?

Example - very average looking PM, not really got the relevant industry experience - asking rate £600.

Accountant recently turned Data Manager no none finance experience - rate £650

Similar contracts are out there for much less money, particularly the data one - I know of 3 other data contracts going at around the 45-500 mark.

I have spoken to a couple of other agents who I know better than the ones on the PSL and they tell me that around £500 is reasonable for both.

Also what is it with apps architects? They get a sniff of SAP and want £750 a day??!

Our agency agreement is allegedly transparent and we pay a 12.5% margin (I know that is comparitively low) - it's possible that the agents are upping the ... contractor rates either officially or unofficially ... to get their % up.

A quick internet check seems to inidicate my sub £550 rate is perfectly normal. Would appreciate your views, am happy to argue an up in budget if these are current rates but I'm thinking the agents and/or the candidates are taking the p*ss. One of the agencies - the one quoting the big rates - is not a SAP agency and maybe they are upping the £s because of the system thinking that's the way SAP rates are ...

    Cheers

    Windy

Average PM rate is £550 according to that. There are only a few "average" rates over £500.

Also Hemel isn't really central London so I doubt that they could demand the upper end of the scale based on location as its not W1C.

Have worked in SAP on and off for years and there used to be much more of a premium.

Also for PM role quite often seen as a risk-reward thing because SAP has a real tendency to cost more and take longer than it's originally set up for, and a good PM can help mitigate that, a bad one will take the money and run

Would be surprised to pay less than £600/day for a PM worth having. Also, the Accountant turned data monkey is probably trying it on - if you had a 'proper' FICO person you could safely add another £150 to that for starters. Yes, there are still people putting £1K away for this.

Even code monkeys are over the £500 mark now - getting expensive to run a project unfortunately.

Allegedly of course - I do .net not that German ERP stuff.

Developers should be able to get £450-600 a day in SAP. Functional £500-£800 or more. If I was to take a PM role I'd be looking certainly at £750+. Well, actually, given the fact I hate doing PM, I wouldn't do it for less than £3000 a day.

There's loads of work around. Rates are good. (But not silly like 97-99 ).

You can still get cheap developers. But they'll cost you more.

The rates do seem to rise and fall very quickly these days and at the moment the market does seem to be pretty buoyant and anybody who wants to be is working already. Hence big rates ! I would go to a couple of the well known '.Net' agencies and see what they can turn up. Have you tried the one named after a shape and a number ? They'll have the CV of a high percentage of experienced contract PM's and would know what rate is required.

Does anyone know how I might get back into the SAP world? I used to be an ABAPper back in 2000 but jumped ship to work in other technologies. I wouldn't mind getting back into something more stable than my current stint.

Go back through your CV, chop out some of the non ABAP post 2000 stuff and insert some ABAP stuff in its place, quite easy really. I also jumped ship circa 2000 but came to my senses when I got back into low level coding and my brain started to hurt.

BUT remember .Net is the future !

There are lots of 'sexy' new technologies but if you can still write an ABAP and do a layout (not going to use the proper word here) you can get work. Price it cheap, get on a gig, pick up new stuff. Lots of upgrades around now.

EDIT: WindyAnna - need any techies?
