A few of the large recruitment companies have reported disappointing financial results over the last year indicating that the tech job market is struggling.

More bad news yesterday when Bytes, the UK's largest Microsoft reseller forecasted a weak outlook after worse than expected results and their shares fell by 33%.

Other big resellers like Computacenter and Softcat also saw sharp falls in their share price as a result.

Yet another indicator, if we ever needed one, to show that the contractor market is probably going to remain challenging for quite a while yet.

2yrs ago, I was close to finishing my house project. I was uttley dependant on contracting to provide an income.

2yrs latter, house project has still not been completed. Luckily I didn't push ahead with the planned basement .

Nevermind, no point wishing for a market which is not there. Have to play the game with the current cards.

Really don't know why you are so confident of this. The whole country is a mess and IT is not the only sector that is struggling. You may well be right but I don't think anybody can have any certainty on it until the economy is healthy again.

Another public sector panel interview coming up. Get ready for it now... "Tell me about a time when..."

This type of competency based question is common in the private sector too but I guess the vast majority of interview questions in public and charity sectors still follow this pattern.

Trouble is, it's now quite easy to game the system with ChatGPT. Just ask it to look at the job spec/advert and create a list of the most likely interview questions for that role. Then ask it to create appropriate answers based on your CV. Voila!

I've managed quite a lot of non-profit recruitment and for mid-level and senior roles, encouraged hiring managers to reduce the emphasis from competency based questions to scenario or case study questions.

Trouble is, many hiring managers are not good interviewers and not very good at thinking up decent scenarios and questions.
