Is the London insurance market what you-all mean by "niche skills"?

I've not considered it so. My current client could be so described, and my industry domain experience is varied to say the least.

Maybe the London Insurance market is not totally off limits in terms of having some specific IT skills but they very heavily prefer people with experience in that market.

I've worked for a general insurer and a speciality one and got in partly because of experience elsewhere in financial services i.e. retail banking.

I would probably really struggle to get an opportunity in the Lloyd's of London insurance market.

What's special about insurance that makes it so closed-off to non-insurance bods? I've worked in O&G engineering before and they had the same rule, actually Pharma also has the same rule and on top of this they don't like the "dirty" O&G bods to do Pharma work as apparently the mentality is different (it's not if you are reasonable). In Pharma however there's more regulation, so I get this, O&G had it's safety aspect, so I kind of get that as well, is insurance also about regs ?

            Nothing, IMO.

Respect to the other posters who's experiences differ, but although any business domain has some degree of preference for previous experience I don't find there to be a big barrier to entry for Pharma nor Insurance.

It's the usual BS gotcha, there's always one.

2005: Must have Murex experience (to get a job in an IB)
2025: Must have Duck Creek experience (to get a gig in London Markets).

There isn't anything particularly special about insurance, other than the people working in insurance thinking it is.

Never worked in that industry but have seen enough job specs to notice that they are sufficiently generic that anyone with a modicum of ability could pick it up.

I have had a couple of stints in insurance and I can confirm I am not that special.

Just read this completely. Got back from holiday and have flu!

At lot of honesty in that thread and it read well. Not too many big egos as there seems to be in this tread.

Need to get some applications completed. Did someone say SC cleared jobs available?

SC positions usually take ages to fill. As there is a lot people without that just apply anyway that need to be discarded, including the freshies.

Trying to get my agency to use Clarity.
agency saying no as they don’t have enough liability insurance…anyone come across that?

Agency refusing saying they only work with umbrellas with £10m….

Sorry it’s other way around the agency doesn’t have £10m insurance only £5m …that’s the issue?

                      seems odd…
