I don't like people Most people are bad.... Most people I would rather just avoid. If it was possible I wouldn't get involved with "people". Unfortunately it can't be avoided most the time.

Doesn't stop me acting professionally, being nice to peoples face and so on...

But I don't want to go pub with you, I don't want to buy you cakes and I don't want to do the lottery with you... And I positively will not get involved in the brewing up rota....

I drink water only now at work to make it less awkard for the permies when you tell them you have work to do and making them all a cup of tea, isn't work.... and I am perfectly capable of making my own...

You wouldn't ask the plumber who came to fix your pipes to do any of the above. So don't ask me.

Is it too much to ask to just be left alone to be a miserable git ? IS IT!!!

Ah, you are 'one of them'. Most clients have 'one of them' on site. Fair enough, fill your boots.

Next thing you will be going on team building weekends, getting involved with the lottery syndicate and going for lunchtime runs....

Get in, get the job done, get out, invoice and get paid. No need for cake and frills. That is for the residents.
Not on about after work. If they go out after work I might or might not go. If I do, I'll buy a beer. Last time I bought pizza for lunch - £15 for two large ones. They were WELL impressed with it. In the scheme of things earned that in the time it took me to eat it.

Nothing worse for permies than seeing the stuck up fella in the corner who thinks he's it knowing he earns more than them. At my client, I'm the decent guy who just happens to work slightly differently than them.

Again I disagree. You might be the best/most skilled contractor ever but if the client co manager is constantly getting it in the neck from the permies saying Contractor x is a right miserable twat when is he going, its going to wear him down eventually.

Remember the permies are staying long term, you are not - manager wants happy permies not moaning ones. Manager also wants contractors who fit in and dont upset the permies who then moan about contractor x whos been brought in, paid loads and is taking their job. IMHO anyway.

Slightly different since plumber is probably there for just one day not for weeks on end.

Also, if I got a plumber in who was miserable, acted like a spoilt bellend etc I might consider a different one next time.

I've done it. Got a place that I used to get carpets, flooring from. Good prices, and they did a good job. BUT the guy was the most miserable git ever, used to turn up, moan constantly. In the end, I thought sod it, hes doing my head in, and went elsewhere.

What are they paying me to do ? A job for them or to be their mates...

I haven't had a client yet who hasn't had total respect for me and wanted to renew me (even if they couldn't due to budget or simply not enough work to justify). They tend to like the fact I actually do the work they are paying me to do with none of the fluff.

I think you are getting a picture I am not professional or polite. I don't sit in the corner telling everyone to do one I polite decline their silly requests and manufacture reasons why I won't bow down to office culture. Its all easily done.

Come out for a drink after work - I can't I have to pick kids up
                    Come out to lunch
                    - I can't I need to pick the kids up and need to leave on time (I generally don't do lunch so I can get out earlier)
Fancy a brew - Tackled first day by saying I only drink water
Someone buys me cakes - thanks but I am on a diet. Negates the need to buy them back

Everyone loves me... When all their tulip fails its usually me who gets them out of the tulip. I secretly despise them....

Would you really consider a different one just because he wouldn't brew up for you and do the lottery with you ?

Or would his quality and value for money work make you do your own brewing up ? and perhaps make him one without expecting one in return ?

I think we both know the answer
