    No travel or subsistance claims going to be allowed anymore

    Loophole that lets freelance workers offset the cost of lunch and commute against tax to be closed in Budget | Daily Mail Online

    This will make me think a bit more on taking a job further away in the future. Can't see clients or agencies upping rates to compensate as it does not effect them.

    Didn't we do this a while ago?

    It's still in discussion atm and there is no clear indication it will ever make it out of that stage.

    Edit: Yes we did. http://forums.contractoruk.com/accou...ntractors.html

      I remember that thread but I just read this in the news today like it is actually going to be happening now from 2016 like it has been decided.

        I'm pretty sure our tame accountants and brolly members would have had something to say about it if that were the case.

        The DM routinely publishes rumours, lies and half truths as fact in a way that makes Fox News envious.

          The way its phrased is this is to impact umbrella employees and there has been examples of umbrellas lying about expenses to reduce their NI contributions....

          The entire relationship between employment and tax needs to be investigated and fixed as a whole but no one seems to have the time and willingness to do it...

            The taxman has estimated that there are 150,000 individuals potentially working in this way. The claims made by them for tax relief on their travel and subsistence are said to cost the Exchequer at least £400million per year.

            I am really struggling with the maths here... wouldnt that be around £13k in lunch & travel expenses each person?
            about £50 a day!

              50 quid sounds quite conservative.

                Return train ticket to out of london suburb = £30
                tube ticket = £5
                lunch = £10
                Coffee = £6

                I don't spend that much and I don't claim, its just an example. I know people who have done in the past.

                    ...and you still have to pay it. It's only the CT payable that you save on.
