How about we do a merger with the Republic of Ireland?

What I had in mind was a merger, with the constituent parts having a weighted average of political power.
In fact, it would solve the problem if Ireland could get a move on and leave the EU as we are doing.

Originally posted by GJABS View PostI was just having a think re Brexit. The problem with the Irish border could be elegantly resolved if the UK merged with the Republic of Ireland to become one sovereign nation, outside of the EU.
Called the UKIB (the United Kingdom of Ireland and Britain), the seat of government would move from London to Dublin, leaving London to take over most business and financial work. Irish MPs would only be distinguished from British MPs by virtue of the location of their constituencies, not their nationality. The five constituent countries (northern Ireland, southern Ireland, England, Scotland, wales) would remain in place.
It would respect the good Friday agreement by not having a border between northern Ireland or the UK or southern Ireland. It would satisfy the desire by Sinn Fein and the Catholics for a united Ireland. It would keep the DUP happy, because they would remain in the same country as their beloved Great Britain.
At the moment, around 40% of Irish people are in favour of leaving the EU, according to the last poll in 2012 I think, and that figure is rising.
Makes sense don't you think? You heard it first here. Init?
You complain that the EUSSR are trying to control us, and we must break free. That we want to take back control. Then, when you realise that the mess you've made isn't as easy to resolve ass you were led to believe, you suggest taking over (I know you say join, but you're a Brexiter, you mean take over) another sovereign state. So your solution to our problem, is to do to another country that you claim is happening to us.
Can't make up this idiocy, yet every day we see it on here and other forums like the BBC HYS.
And we give these people the voteI am what I drink, and I'm a bitter manComment

And if you think Ireland is not capable of holding their own in a merged UK-Ireland country, clearly you don't know the Irish!Comment

If Boris Johnson would grow up a bit and command the confidence of fellow brexiteers, he could lead the country out with a no-deal approach that would be very much more likely to extract major concessions from Europe. Indeed I think we could have a few billions of discounts on goods and services we purchase from Europe from them, given our new trade deals with the rest of the world will allow us to more easily "shop elsewhere".

As for Bojo taking over, I'd love for this to happen. He as PM, Davies as brexit secretary (again, because he was so good first time around) and JRM as Chancellor. Get these cowards to stand up and take some responsibility. But, it's not happen until Brexit is dusted as they all know there is no solution to this mess. If they had a viable solution that would have kicked out May already.
And I thought you voted UKIP ... wouldn't you want your MP (which one would that be, by the way) to be PM? Or do you consider Bojo to be one of yours now? You do realise Bojo no more supports leaving the EU as he does staying in the EU .. Bojo is only in it for himself.I am what I drink, and I'm a bitter manComment
