I'm not sure it's meaningless posturing - from Parliament last night the actual impact is minimal, but it does set a reasonable precedent that any deal has to be a good one and not just rammed through by May, and from the EU side they're seriously pissed off with Davis treating this like some kind of game, which is damaging our reputation and possible negotiating position.
In EU negotiations, everyone is always terminally pissed off with everyone else. It’s the routine psychodrama of the EC and EP, in particular. Varoufakis’ book is really worth a read; they’re utterly shameless (we could learn from them ).
I would be delighted if there were no deal. Just think what it would do for the car industry as we unilaterally impose 200% tariffs on imports. We won't be importing any more mercs or beamers, or Renaults or Peugeots, even the Seat's and Skodas will no longer be available. This will present an open goal to the UK motor industry.
I expect to see British Leyland rising like a phoenix to fill the gap with their renowned quality products. Shouldn't take them more than 3-4 months to gear up.
And think of the opportunity for the Scottish winemaking industry! Once we haven't got any of that French muck cluttering the supermarket shelves - well, it's another open goal!
And what about erotica? For decades we've had to put up with all that Swedish smut. There's an opportunity for us to grow our own industry in this field now that we're, ahem, pulling out.
Including their standard bearers, the right wing media...
Grieve also questioned the response of some newspapers to the vote, including a front-page story in the Daily Mail that claimed 11 Tory “self-consumed malcontents” had betrayed their leader, party and 17.4m Brexit voters and had increased the “possibility of a Marxist in no 10”.
He added: “The form of reporting that the Daily Mail adopts is an incitement to obscuring what the issues actually are. That then adds to the atmosphere.”
