The more a GE polarises to Leave vs. Remain, the more Remain is trounced in terms of Parliamentary seats. in that sense, this result is quite encouraging However, May won't be oblivious to the similarities between Richmond and Maidenhead in terms of her personal ambitions. Imagine that: a landslide for pro-Leave MPs, a massive Tory majority, and the PM loses her seat

As much as I would like to believe this, Richmond really was a Tory anomaly. From a friends FB post who knows her stuff; there are nine of the top thirty Tory held Lib Dem Seats that voted remain but only two by a significant remain vote share.

Much more interesting is Sleaford by-election next week, 75% Brexit vote if the Tories lose the seat all bets are off.

It's a foregone conclusion that Parliament would be massively rebalanced away from Remain and towards Leave and that Labour would cease to be a credible opposition. The demographics of the Leave vote are fantastic in terms of Parliamentary seats, and there's no evidence of buyer's remorse (on the contrary, many Remainers now want May to get on with it). I think we're agreed: bring on a GE and make Parliament representative again on the major issue of our times! . The only downside is that we'd inevitably end up with more Lib Dumbs too.

You're assuming that a GE would be a choice between Remain and Leave, but it's not, it's a choice between "Soft Brexit" and "Hard Brexit". There are a huge number of leave voters that don't want a "Hard Brexit", and a lot of young voters who didn't bother last time, motivated to get out there.
