The result of this election means that Heathrow third runway can be built. The LibDem also campaigned against it, but they are irrelevant and Theresa May can ignore them.Originally posted by eek View PostHardly surprising in an area that voted 74% remain...

As a message on Brexit, there is nothing to see here. The area voted strongly to Remain, so nothing has changed.
This was as much about giving Goldsmith a kicking as anything else.Comment

Richmond Park by-election: Lib Dems' Sarah Olney defeats Zac Goldsmith in Brexit backlashThe by-election was called after Mr Goldsmith quit as a Tory MP in protest over plans to build a new runway at Heathrow airport.
However it swiftly became a vote about Britain's decision to leave the European Union"A people that elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims, but accomplices," George OrwellComment

Over the length of parliaments about 10 MPs die. More actually die when the Tories are in power than when Labour are in power.Originally posted by Chuck View PostThe result of this election means that Heathrow third runway can be built. Added in with the actions of idiots like Goldsmith the Tory majority can end up on on a knife edge."You’re just a bad memory who doesn’t know when to go away" JRComment

Worrying reminder for pro-Remain Labour candidates in Leave seats. Sleaford by-election will be interesting too. This will worry May in two ways. First, Maidenhead looks a lot like Richmond. Second, there has to be a non-trivial risk that UKIP will generate a coalition scenario if northern voters perceive backsliding on Brexit. In all scenarios, it looks very bad indeed for Labour. Interesting times!Comment

Except, this wasn't a Brexit backlash. This was a confirmation of what this area had already stated, by voting (I think) around 70% to Remain.Originally posted by Paddy View PostComment

If Brexit hadn't won the day then the people of Richmond wouldn't have voted for the LibDems. So to that extent it is a Brexit backlash.Originally posted by Chuck View PostExcept, this wasn't a Brexit backlash. According to this estimate:

152 constituencies voted Remain (it wasn't organised according to constituencies so it isn't exact).
Come on Theresa. Give us a General Election. Will work inside IR35. Or for food.Comment
