Meeting with MP
I had a meeting (my first) with my (Conservative) MP today. I was very impressed by him: he's very bright and focused on the key details of our case against the retrospective element of S58. He asked me to provide evidence for some of the statements that I made & I have asked NTRT for this.
I have never discussed this topic with anyone except my wife before & was not looking forward to it.
In the event, he apologized that he had not read the briefing documents that I had sent him. He was extremely businesslike but also patient in letting me cover the ground that I had prepared. He spent about 40 minutes going through the whole story, quizzing me on points and testing our case.
I told him how the arrangement aimed to give certainty compared with IR35. He was interested when I said that on behalf of members the Professional Contractor's Group had won 1,485 IR35 inquiries and lost just 8 and that the Office for Tax Simplification recommended in March 2011 that IR35 should be suspended. It may be there but this is not something that I remember seeing in the NTRT toolkit & briefings.
He said that when I provide the evidence that he requested, he will take the matter up with the Chancellor.
I don't think that I could have asked for more.
It is a daunting thing to do. He complimented me on the presentation that I'd made, saying that not all constituents are so well prepared. I think that compliment belongs to NTRT whose lobbying kit & briefing notes provided me with what I said apart from how I personally came to join the arrangement & the effect that it is having on my wife and I.
If you haven't yet plucked up courage to see your MP, don't delay. It really isn't that bad.
