Surely if work is done late / to a poor standard then the client will claim on the policy?

Has anyone managed to lodge a complaint with the accounting body? Has anyone claimed from the PI insurance?
What I mean is (and I could be wrong) when an accountant is sued they claim on their policy to cover what they are being sued for.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

You're right. The Accountant's PI Insurance will cover the accountant against him/her getting sued by you. It does not entitle you to claim on it. You will have to sue.

Can't understand why Darren has not sold his practice. It's fairly standard practice to sell a practice pretty quickly when something nasty happens so that you can still get something for it rather than it withering and dying.

          I've known of two cases.

First was where the guy running a practice was arrested for theft (stealing cash from customers) and he had the practice sold within a week of his arrest, so that by the time it was in the local rag, the firm had changed its name, and all clients had been written to by the new owners telling them it was business as usual.

Second was where a sole practitioner was diagnosed with a terminal disease and obviously didn't want to waste the last months of his life preparing tax returns. Exactly the same thing happened - within a week he'd cleared his desk and never went back, leaving the practice and the clients running under new management.

In both cases, loss of clients was negligible, but it has to happen fast and the new owner has to introduce himself and promise continuity of service pretty damn quickly.

In Darren's case, it seems there'll be nothing left to sell!

He needs a continual income to pay the FSA fine.

When I first started contracting I signed up with some "club" that let me put in monitors on 3 companies for one year, so I set it up on the first client, agent and accountant. And for some reason I'm still getting these emails and even if I can't remember the exact details, I remember getting one of these emails at the end (I think, could have been in the autumn) of last year saying that 100% of the ownership of Upton's had been transferred to some other person. So I'm not sure if Darren's had anything left that he could sell by the time that these new accusations began.

I get the feeling that they've given up as well now though, looking at companies house their return is overdue since June, which doesn't really look very good for an accountancy firm.

Looks like they're advertising for new staff.

Direct Gov doesn't keep links with sessions.

You need to put in the search terms "accountant" and "wakefield" to get the job postings you were pointing to.

                      Thanks SueEllen.

I wonder if the new staff are for Upton & Co or Freedom Accountancy/Accountants. Because surely they would find it difficult to recruit staff for Upton & Co now the name is tarnished.
