Tina used to run the payroll and do that side of things. She probably doesn't need to be an accountant to run the business, especially if you can hire someone with the right qualifications.

Regarding managing your business. We all know when our accounts need to be filed and what deadlines we need to meet. If you don't plan in advance of these things, then I think you have yourself to blame. Its sloppy not managing your affairs and expecting you accountant to do everything for you. Personally I don't like to put such trust in others and like to be in control of my own affairs. You should be preparing your accounts at the latest 3 months before they are due to be filed.

After saying all this, I think you can then manage things with Upton. If they can't do your accounts 3 months before they are due, its time to move. If they are not doing all the admin that you expect (payroll, VAT calculations, companies house return, personal tax return, etc) then time to move on.

So far, I have had good communication with them and everything is happening as normal. Thus why should I be out of pocket by changing accountants? If I need to do it, I will, but for now I see no reason to change. Its also alot of hassle. For now everything is ticking over ok.

    Just my opinion.

They had my information within a few weeks of year end. I got the accounts within a couple of days of the due date, i.e. 9 months later. Not acceptable. Comms went through the floor, phone and email. Again, not acceptable.

Coupled with the FSA fine and the current investigation, I would say you're a brave man. Others may use different terminology...
      Older and ...well, just older!!

I told myself basically the same thing for the last 2 years during which I was thinking of moving accountant. If I get everything ready nice and early then there won't be any trouble, I'm in complete control, moving is such a hassle and I'll have to pay someone else more.

Now it's two legal investigations later and thankfully I'm unscathed. Do you wait until you get bitten by the problems people are having? Would you stick with a bank that was going through the same situations?

Stay if you like, but don't stay because of laziness.

Amazing, just amazing. Some people just cannot see warning signs for what they are.

Don't worry he will come back in a few months licking his wounds.

Then again it could be one of the Uptons posting as his post count isn't very high.

Don't see what the worry is about? I have had a couple of accountants offer to do my accounts within a month. I have been contracting a long time and been in IT a very loooong time. As long as you meet the deadlines of when things are due and don't leave things to the last minute, what is the problem? My affairs are very straightforward. I have a deadline for when Upton need to do them; if they don't do them by this deadline then I move on. Its very simple. I don't have to love them or be their best friends; its a business arrangement. I am not very concerned about their problems; its not my problem. Seems like their are loads of accountants eager to get new clients.

So the fact that they have been accused of stealing money off their clients isn't your problem as a client?

Might be when previous clients start suing Upton’s directly. Limited liability does not protect company officers from criminal offences. I’m putting together my formal complaint with the ACCA in the coming weeks.

One person within the firm has been accused, removed from position and I'm sure will be dealt with appropriately if found guilty ....doesn't mean to say the firm itself is bad. Also spoke to Tina yesterday, don't wish what's she's going through on anyone but pleased she's working through things to get the business itself back on track.

Personally found the staff to be the lazy ones at times needing to be reminded who's paying their wages...glad that there's to be a new team in place.
