The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.
But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.” -

Can't understand why Darren has not sold his practice. It's fairly standard practice to sell a practice pretty quickly when something nasty happens so that you can still get something for it rather than it withering and dying.
I've known of two cases.
First was where the guy running a practice was arrested for theft (stealing cash from customers) and he had the practice sold within a week of his arrest, so that by the time it was in the local rag, the firm had changed its name, and all clients had been written to by the new owners telling them it was business as usual.
Second was where a sole practitioner was diagnosed with a terminal disease and obviously didn't want to waste the last months of his life preparing tax returns. Exactly the same thing happened - within a week he'd cleared his desk and never went back, leaving the practice and the clients running under new management.
In both cases, loss of clients was negligible, but it has to happen fast and the new owner has to introduce himself and promise continuity of service pretty damn quickly.
In Darren's case, it seems there'll be nothing left to sell!Comment

I get the feeling that they've given up as well now though, looking at companies house their return is overdue since June, which doesn't really look very good for an accountancy firm.Comment

Thanks SueEllen.
I wonder if the new staff are for Upton & Co or Freedom Accountancy/Accountants. Because surely they would find it difficult to recruit staff for Upton & Co now the name is tarnished.Comment
