      Guy's,

Just been looking at the following document:

      http://www.publications.parliament.u...m.145-151.html

      " 134

Clause 55, page 27, line 31, leave out ‘are treated as always having had effect’ and

insert ‘shall have effect from 6th April 2008’.

      "

      Any thoughts ?

They were bound to close the scheme at some stage - now it is closed. MTM are now doing something new - along the lines that other offshore outfits do I believe though I have yet to see the details.

          zippo,

You got to it before me. The first ammendment I posted the other day was from Lib Dem MPs. Now, the Conservatives have pitched in with two more, one of which is the one you referred to.

If these get approved then it should kill off the retrospective effect completely.

These may be debated today, in which case we should know by tomorrow.

          Watch this space!

Does this mean that Mal will vote Labour? :-)

Yeah right. All pigs fed and ready for launch...

FWIW I hope they win simply to put one over on NL. I have no sympathy for the position they find themselves in.

Your comments are much appreciated. Though there is a very long way to go yet - I still reckon another 2 years. And plenty more bridges to be crossed.

                  clarification

Can anyone clarify for me please, as I'm not familiar with the inner workings of government, do those debating these amendments have the power to make these changes happen, will there be a vote of some kind, if so what is the composition of the voting body, does the government have a majority etc... I am thrilled that the buggers may be forced to eat humble pie, but I dont want to get too excited if the committee is only giving 'recommendations' or whatever,

This gives a pretty good summary of it.

Simply put, barring a back bench rebellion or an upset in the House of Lords a government with a decent majority can pretty much do what it wants if it really wants to.

EDIT : Since it's taxation related the Lords don't debate it, they just rubber stamp it automatically. Barring a decent number of Labour MP's getting upset about it, it will get passed in whatever form the Govt decides it wants.

Correct. The tricky bit is getting enough people upset enough to make a difference. That's why the PCG's win over FBT in the budget was so significant, but look at the effort that required for what is at present still only a partial victory.
