I'm in the process of closing my company down which has not been trading in over a year. Have already deregistered from VAT however before that went through I had to make an interim payment of about £1k which I'm now having trouble getting back. My accountant has submitted the final vat return and the refund is due however it seems impossible to get it back. Apparently HMRC no longer issues cheques because of the current situation and they can't take my bank details over the phone as they WFH. I've never signed the LTD up to the online HMRC portal and as the LTD is no longer registered for VAT I don't think that's possible anymore. Is there any other way of getting the refund? My accountant so far has been useless and I've been chasing for the past few weeks, getting different excuses as to why the refund has not been processed and what else needs doing. Thought I'd try my luck here.

you paid money to HMRC that you didn't owe them???
On behalf of the people of the UK, thank you for your kind donation.
How are you closing the company? If liquidating then the liquidators may be able to help as it's debt on the books and needs to be accounted for.
It does sound like your accountant has let you down though. I presume it was his wheeze to have you on interim payments to save him work. I nearly used annual reporting and interim payments until I realise the accountant wasn't going to give me a discount so I decided he can work for his money and I only pay what I owe.See You Next TuesdayComment
