What is the construction between the garage and router. I believe the following provides some approximations of the attenuation values through common house constructions at 2.4 GHz (802.11b/g):
    Plasterboard wall: 3dB
Glass wall with metal frame: 6dB
    Cinder block wall: 4dB
    Window: 3dB
    Metal door: 6dB
Metal door in brick wall: 12.4dB

The most likely problem though is other peoples wifi... Is there a lot of wifi signals available in your house and garage?

Could try getting a dual band one that not everyone has and the Apple stuff can use the new band? F knows what that really means but here is the detail..

Is your bike magnetic resistance (quiet) or fan? Could be the magnetic field.

What height is the router relative to the iPad's position in the garage?

I found my phone wouldn't connect reliably to my router when it was sat on the desk, but raising the router by 6 inches did the trick.

If you've got electrical power in the garage, why not use a HomePlug type thing to provide wifi through the power supply

I had a similar issue, too many walls between router at back and lounge at front, so I ran Cat 6 around the outside of the house to the front, and fitted a socket in the lounge.

All worked just fine, until the dumbass brickies cut through the cable on the outside of the house with a shovel.

            Repair pending.

With the garage door open pretty much the only thing between the iPad and the router is a double-glazed window.

I'll plan to look at what channel we are using and if small adjustments in router position do anything.

And yes it's a resistance bike.

Download yourself a free copy of inSSIDer which shows which channels are occupied by whom.

I changed my wireless access point to the Apple Airport and have a couple of Express units to extend the range. Has 5Ghz channels too.

I found the Huawei WS320 Wireless repeater is pretty good at extending range but you'd need to plug it into an extension between house and garage.
