I used to use PFE a lot.
Those running RISC OS on their Raspberry Pis should get themselves a copy of Zap, which I remember as being extremely fine (although it's nearly twenty years since I last used it).
I've been using TextWrangler a bit on the Mac lately for things like server config files, though I use Eclipse for most development work. Straightforward text editing just gets done in TextEdit.Comment

As all mentioned above. PFE for programming, Texpad for all sorts of notes, Notepad++ for code snippets. Good thing about last two is you can use simple macros to create an index at the top of each page.bloggoth
