Also - how do I tell if my MacBook is running 32/64 bit? Did OSX become 64bit only when they switched to Intel?
My Mac is early 2011, anything before this will take only 8gb. I used this: Identify Your Mac - Lookup your unit by Apple Serial Number or Model Number

For memory it will take etc: MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory

    No idea on 64bit... Sorry.

Sad times, my MacBook can (according to Crucial) only go up to 4Gb. Not sure it's worth it going from 2->4. It's an aluminium late-2008 MacBook... any ideas how to tell if it can really only do 4Gb?

And I'm running i386 - 32bit. Does it make any difference, really?

Yes. A 32 bit system won't see any more than 4Gb RAM.

I wonder if I'd see any real benefit going from 2->4Gb. Mainly using the thing for XCode C++ development.

What host OS are you running and what guests?

So it sounds like your book is only 32-bit then. So 4gb will be the best memory you can handle. As to if you would notice the additional memory. it will depend on many of your applications.
