    Problem with new iPod Nano

Since I've run out of room on my old iPod I thought I'd treat myself to a new 16gb Nano.

the problem is that my PC tells me that I have a problem with the installation of new hardware and itunes doesn't recognise it.

I should have smelt a rat when the assistant at John Lewis handed me a troubleshooting leaflet when I bought it.

I can't find anything on Google. Any suggestions?

Have you tried hooking it up to a friend's machine? That may give you some indication that the problem either lies within the iPod itself, or doesn't, and save you a journey if your friend is nearer than the shop.

The symptoms you describe suggest a Windows problem, probably driver related; or a hardware problem with the iPod unit itself.

Can you successfully attach other devices to the USB port? If so, can you successfully attach other storage devices to said port?

If you can't then it implies a problem with your generic Windows drivers for USB-attached storage devices. A Windows Update may fix this, or you may be stuck with having to do some more detailed diagnostics.

If other USB storage devices can be successfully attached, then it may be a problem with either the drivers for the iPod, or a hardware fault with the iPod's connection.

(BTW, there may be other aspects relevant to this issue that I fail to mention, so use your own intellectual clout to analyse things on the basis of your local results.)

I've never used an iPod Nano with a Windows machine, but I would assume it's worthwhile making sure that your iTunes installation is the latest version; presumably this will ensure you have the latest drivers.

If updating iTunes fails to fix things (and being Windoze you'll probably have to reboot before you can be certain) then it may be a hardware problem with the thing itself. If so, I would suggest returning to John Lewis and challenging them to connect it to one of their own computers; they'll probably just give you another one.

Of course, if they have any nous, and with your agreement, they'll demonstrate that your existing one or, if that fails, the replacement can be successfully connected to one of their computers before you leave the store. That way you would know that the problem was at your end, so to speak. Sadly they may not be in a position to do this

When you say that you are having problems with the installation, can you expand? Is Device Manager showing your new Ipod as an unknown device?

I assume you have tried plugging a different device into the same port?

If you are able to get a spare cable and plug it in to confirm that the problem is not with the cable (Can be a common cause of some problems).

Well sadly, following the way my computer is stuttering after I've put the latest version of iTunes, I think it's in need of a rebuild... .

My SE phone has the same problem Nick.

Thanks for the cable advice as well pmeswani.

I've had this computer for over 3 years without trouble, but also without much tidying beyond the usual CCleaner run through, and it is getting slower...

I've been dreading this as I'm not that technical and the thought of reinstall everything (particularly getting new updates for all of the drivers) fills me with cold icy fear...

Time to start printing out those advice websites I've been saving...

(I just wish I'd taken my own advice and created a CMDB for my kit - still I'll get another chance to do that now... )

The implementation of MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is flaky on XP, installing WMP11 is the best chance you have of making it work. Otherwise go into the Device Manager and you will see there are two drivers for a USB device, change from the MTP one to the mass storage one.

I had a similar problem with DS1's iPhone - it'll connect up fine to any PC apart from his. From reading around there is a suggestion that there might be a driver conflict, quite often with a printer driver. Not much help I know, but it may be of comfort to realise that you are not alone

I've got itunes looking at it but now I can't get access to the songs I've bought from Apple.

Sod it - how difficult should it be to upgrade?
