Having not dealt with hardware for several years, do any of you more technical bods know what a state-of-the-art desktop PC would comprise of in terms of O/S, processor, memory and storage?

    Intel® Core™2 Extreme quad-core processor QX6850

64 Bit OS you can and 4-slot Motherboard you can have 8GB of RAM using DDR3.

    Eg. http://computershopper.com/reviews/a...erboard-review

Would be pricey mind. Not for permies.

        IMO:

        Intel Quad Core
        4GB RAM
Dual SLI 8800GTX Ultra 768MB RAM
        Vista Ultimate X64
RAID 0+1 Storage using 1TB SATA II disks.

Apple do quite a nice pro box...

          www.apple.com/uk/macpro

Not cheap for 8 cores & 16GB - £10k including twin 30" panels, but should rip through that 3d rendering.

You must blend in well with the permies then! Most of 'em use ancient laptops with nailed batteries and scarce amounts of RAM.
