Metal prefab garages any good?

Anyone got one?

The recent storms ripped off part of the roof of our 1960s prefab concrete detached single garage (10'x16'). It was already pretty knackered, and is now beyond economic repair. We've arranged for someone to demolish it and take it away, which is a bit more expensive than normal demo because the roofing sheets contain asbestos.

The question is, what to replace it with? We don't use it for a car, only for storing tools, garden equipment etc. We could get something smaller but I'd rather stick with the same size to cover the existing slab.

Our builder isn't sure the foundations would be up to blockwork, and anyway he reckons it would be a lot cheaper to get an off-the-shelf garage than for him to build one from scratch. Our choices are therefore:
1) another concrete prefab
2) timber prefab
3) metal prefab

We're familiar with concrete and timber ones but don't know anyone who's had a metal one.

I've got an Asgard bike shed:

They come in various sizes, although the ceiling is a bit lower than a normal garage.

I've been happy with mine, and it's stood up to the recent storms (which have flattened nearby fences).

Ok if it's insulated inside, otherwise a condensation nightmare: rusty tool city.

Although, saying that, the same applies to my breezeblock garage: the condensation on the asbestos sheeting required the installation of internal guttering.

See one in person. If you buy it online and go cheap you'll just get a single sheet corrugated style thing which will sway if you blow on it. The basic entry things you see around are just awful. Couple of self tappers in to thin steel, sliding door which rarely works. Do your research and go see one if you can before you part with any cash.

This site seems to stock the entire range of god awful single sheet efforts. Personally I wouldn't touch them. Those Asgard ones looks pretty beefy though.

Go look at a few and get an idea how they are made so you can spot it in the adverts.

Similar thing applies to cheaper timber ones. The google reviews say it all.

We'll probably go for concrete prefab. They ain't pretty but at least they last decades and, unlike timber, require virtually no ongoing maintenance.

Chap next door but one has spent months converting his tin shed into a workshop by lining the walls with insulation and boards so he can fix shelves & suchlike plus tanking the concrete floor & fitting insulation with flooring on top to make it more comfortable to work in.

But then again he's a builder & seems to know what he's doing, with a lot of the stuff coming out of assorted skips here & there.

My tin shed, on the other hand, is made of 1930s tin sheets with an asbestos sheeting roof and is dry inside.

It's keeping the spiders happy.
