1. Remove hard drive(s)
2. Do not put them anywhere hot
3. If you're going to use silica gel, make sure it is dry, otherwise it will do nothing
4. Leave the drive(s) somewhere dry with good airflow.
5. Place the DRY silica gel bags in a plastic bag with the hard drives, then seal the bag with as little air in it as possible.
6. If you believe in any superior being, make the necessary communications with them.
7. Get some hard drive recovery software (I'm partial to RescuePRO by Sandisk)

I'm assuming if there is no damage or loss this isn't required? What about files that are under windows users are they still accessible?
Got home from hols a few months and turned on PC, powered up briefly and then went off.
Closer look I'd left the side off and powered it off. Tell tale signs of cat slash inside case - pretty sure it shorted out my motherboard. New mobo needed anyway.
My cats have got a habit of doing this sort of slash protest at the best of times. Pee wars is the name of the game with them - looks like they didnt like the idea of us being away and found a nice slash space.
