    Home WiFi security camera setup

We live in an isolated house in the sticks, but near a dodgy village. Wee have security lights around the house but it's quite disconcerting when one comes on at 1am and I have a slight worry about being away... If a thief found the place nobody would trouble them!

My window cleaner was talking about low cost systems which will alert you and let you live stream remotely if they see anything, but I've never looked into this and an not sure what to look for.

We'd probably want 2 or 3 cameras but being able to extend would be great. Being able to view over home WiFi or remotely, etc. Just for peace of mind really.

Any recommendations or good search terms?

I have a RaspPi running MotionEye.

    HD
    Infrared camera
    Internet access
    Live streaming
    Email alerts
    WiFi
    Low Power consumption
    Updates over the 'Net
    Highly configurable

I think that total cost for Pi, Camera, Housing and SD card was about £60?

Better than systems costing 5 times as much. Took about an hour to assemble, setup the first time.

Why not get a monitored burglar alarm? ATS/Chubb etc.

around 30-35 a month with police callout.

I've got a Hik Vision DS 7608NI with 6 dome cameras around the house and I'm very pleased with it.

          http://www.hikvision.com/UploadFile/...8591748104.pdf

Does all the remote viewing with an app, alerting, playback and all that. I believe you can zone out certain areas of the cameras view to stop trees moving alerting you but I've not tested that bit yet to be honest.

Haven't had any burglars yet but it spotted our decking guy taking the piss sending some young lads in and also not putting as many coats of varnish on so has paid for itself already

IMO the cost of the kit is peanuts for the piece of mind so go big on that. It's the installation costs if you want all the cables hiding properly etc.

You'll have this kit for many years so don't scrimp on it IMO.

I got some Arlo kit in the Amazon black Friday sale. Seems to do the trick.

I've got a nest camera - recorded in the cloud and you can play back up to 30 days. Has a mobile app will notify you if its sees someone or something. You can setup zones also.

Also, got a foscam, which i just use for checking on the dogs if out, it has a motor so it moves.

Where we are, I think an alarm without callout would be pointless... nobody to see or hear as most people don't even know the house is here!
But then, I'm not so sold on alarms. When I lived somewhere with them there was the constant risk of setting it off yourself, or your pet setting it off. Plus it only alerts you(?) once a break-in is already in progress.

The idea that if the outside light comes on or a car comes up our private drive I can take a look and see what's going on, seems better on the peace-of-mind front personally.
