    Shopping done!

Big Sainsbury’s wasn’t too bad, though busier than I would have liked. When leaving, at maybe 11:40 or so, the car park was noticeably emptier than when I arrived! So maybe the trick is to get there around that time, rather than trying to be early

Tins of Quality Street are now competing with unread books to make it impossible to move around the flat. But the tins will be gone by the end of next week (except my one), and there’ll be even more books

I have stuff that Needs To Be Eaten™ for lunch today and tomorrow, so that decision is taken off my hands. This leaves me free to dither over what to have for tea tonight

    Morning denizens

It was foggy last night but had cleared by this morning, leading to a rosy-fingered dawn. But there’s grey overcast stretching almost to the horizon so as the sun has risen, the light has become increasingly gloomy. The current 5°C supposedly “feels like” -3°, which seems harsh; the high of 10° isn’t expected until this evening, accompanying probable (70%) rain. There’s also a 45-50% chance of some rain at lunchtime. The barometers seem optimistic though, being up to 1002/1010mB

Still thinking of going shopping this morning. Might as well get it out of the way, unless I decide I can’t be bothered and it can wait until tomorrow - though it’s likely to rain all day then

    Morning.

    Wednesday.

    Wet.

    Dark.

    Dank.

    Grey.

    Sunless.

Chilly in here at 13.3 deg, 12 in the kitchen, 9 in the leanto.

1009 mBar, 29.8 in Hg, 756.8 Torr, 14.63 psi, (down from 1011 last night), 66% RH (Lidl electric).

Meanwhile on the 6th of March 2020 Brillo popped in, AndyGarbs, NF, and LM remarked on the clemency of the weather with blue skies & suchlike, whilst NF retreived the car from the MOT station and discovered they'd changed 3 bulbs rather than just the one and he'd popped into the chemists on the way back for the monthly horsepill prescription.

Shopping trip to the barber: now a lot lighter. Last visit: July.

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: Discovering Francis McDormand. NZ customs thing.

Clear skies most of the night, but they clouded over earlier, so it was 4C when we went out. Had a dry walk, but there has been a slight shower since we got back in.

Tonight’s viewing was part one (of two) of the latest 24 Hours in Police Custody. A rather nasty case

And then I started reading Who Was Changed and Who Was Dead by Barbara Comyns, in which the residents of a small village are starting to go mad and kill themselves or each other, not long after the local baker decided to try his hand at baking rye bread

I spent several hours today investigating the URL handling in the new forum software. I think I can finally see how to bend it to my will, though it involves a few weird tricks. Luckily, they provide some rather elegant ways of stepping in and overriding the standard behaviour

I might go shopping tomorrow. I’ve still got a few bits to get for Christmas, and the shops will be getting increasingly crowded and unpleasant between now and then

    Goodnight all

    Afternoon all

Cloudy and dull. Currently 9 degrees ('feels like' 7) and the high was 12. Barometer up to 1011 mBar.

    Sunrise 08:01; Sunset 15:53 GMT

Busy morning at the coal face. In between meetings I decided a couple of my pillow cases were a bit to crumpled and this was prime opportunity to test that steamer I bought a while back. Not a bad outcome; they just look slightly dishevelled now. With a bit of practice I could do better but I've never been one for ironing bed linen so I'm not going to start steaming them to perfection.

Need to talk to potential new client but they've not responded to my messages. This could throw all plans awry as communication of decisions is of paramount importance!

Lunch: a cold roast chicken leg

The weather seems to be turning a bit milder, with some just-about-blue streaks visible behind the clouds

In other news, I tweeted (on Bluesky, of course, but I refuse to call them “skeets”) at the chap who’d first made me aware of Barbara Comyns’ work earlier this year, in response to something related he’d posted, to thank him for that. And my tweet has just been liked by… Jack Womack, author of the excellent Dryco novel series I finished reading the other week!

This confused me as I though I hadn’t noticed the advisory, but it turns out I had my timings all wrong!

So it must be that I had the flat, switched to the spare, then that got a nail as well before I'd had the flat repaired

I vaguely recall it now, but there was a lot of other stuff going on at the time to do with a pandemic so I’d forgotten the details

Very grey day, though if you look closely you can see where some patches of blue might be about to break through. It rained heavily last night and has not long stopped, though supposedly it may resume for a while shortly. The current 7°C “feels like” 2° and the expected high is 9°. The barometers are optimistic though, being up to 997/1005mB

    Morning.

    Tuesday apparently.

    Damp.

    Puddle considerably reduced.

    Grey.

    Hints of sun.

Chilly in here at 14.1 deg, 12.5 in the kitchen, 11 in the leanto, 8.5 in the saltinghouse.

1005.5 mBar, 29.69 in Hg, 754.2 Torr, 14.584 psi, (up from 1000 last night), 68% RH (Lidl electric).

Meanwhile on the 6th of March 2020 NF got a ticket for the boring conference on the 20th of May , LM tried but they'd all gone & she was going to be in Oslo that day anyway, whilst NF's car failed the MOT on a lightbulb, then passed when they put a new one in, though a rear tyre had a nail in it.

    Washing frenzy in progress.

Some clown sent a gigantic text message to my ancient batphone which seems to have removed its ability to receive text messages, which is rather irritating.

Walk (unabbreviated, towpath) walked in the sunshine, during which Morrison was visited: done dusted washed dried sanitised & put away.

Looks very much as if the canal overtopped the towpath in several places yesterday.

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: Y&Y waffling on about landlords. TWATO.

Washing frenzy complete after the TD was pressed into service: everything now airing upstairs. Must remember to retire that worn out towel with one of the many left by my late mother because: a) it smells and b) it doesn't dry worth a damn any more.

Tea: soup etc. Nice enough until I discovered the added saltiness was due to a split lip.

    Entertainment: PM. <click>.

Lee Van Cleefe in a 4 stars production of "Trail's End (1953)". He didn't make it to the credits. .

Time to Remember: 1911 to 1913: starts with the investiture of the Prince of Wales (well he lasted ever such a long time as King), the King Emperor's visit to India for the Delhi Durba, the young lady who threw herself under the King's horse at the Derby, and the Titanic which proved rather less than unsinkable. Narrated by Dame Edith Evans. 1959. A different age.

The Mind of Mr J. G. Reeder: "The Treasure House (1971)".

I finished Sisters By a River tonight. I think I’ll be going straight on to another Barbara Comyns book; they’re very enjoyable

Earlier today I did some stuff with RealityKit, leading to a cube drifting around randomly in 3D space. This may not sound like much, but it means I’ve worked out how to integrate RK with GameplayKit, which provides all kinds of weird and wonderful functionality such as path following and flocking
