Not one, but two major motion picture premieres tonight!

First up was Dominique (2024) in which the eponymous heroine, a trained killer from Ukraine, ends up defending a worthy family from cartel thugs in Colombia. I worked out from IMDb that this character first appeared in another film some years ago, and there are some references back to that at the end, but it’s never a case of feeling like you’re watching a sequel without having seen the madness of George I and George II

It’s pretty good, albeit exceptionally violent. It also (spoiler alert) dodges the trope of the happy ending; if anything, it inverts it. The origin story doesn’t seem to be available but this one works well in its own right, though I wouldn’t mind seeing the first one too

And then Black Widow (2021) which is one of those Marvel films that assumes you’ve watched a dozen others first and leaves you wondering what 90% of the background to the story is about if you had better things to do with your life. Wonder Woman managed to be a Marvel film without any such demands, so they can do it if they want to. I can only conclude that they can’t be bothered, which is a shame as most of the film is really good! I just wish I wasn’t frequently left feeling like I’d forgotten to do my homework

I didn’t get around to having any lunch as I wasn’t feeling particularly hungry, so I ended up just having a bag of salt & vinegar crisps in the afternoon

It’s started raining here. Shouldn’t last though, and it might be a bit brighter tomorrow.

Grey day with a bit of a breeze, though the rain that passed by earlier seems to have been brief, and no more is expected other than a possible (50%) visitation this evening. Not too chilly at 6°C (which “feels like” 0°) with an expected high of 8°, while the barometers are heading back down at 977/985mB

I slept fairly well eventually, but not perfectly, and still feel tired despite awaking fairly late. The lurgy seems to be lingering a little, with a mild cough and occasional bunged-up nose, and passing headaches now and then

Having given careful consideration to the question of shopping, I’ve decided that I don’t need any, so I won’t bother

Heavy rain overnight, but the clouds were disappearing as we went out earlier, and it's now clear skies.

In Berlin, the Red Army has made its way to the Oder in about three weeks and established bridgeheads there. But then they had to get rid of the Germans kettled in East Prussia, which they did with great efficiency and exceptional brutality. Now they can turn their attention westwards again, and we all know how that ends

Meanwhile at Yalta, Stalin has run rings round Churchill and Roosevelt, which will be a problem for Poland, among other countries, for many decades to come

Friday tomorrow! I’m still not sure if I’m going shopping, but I don’t think there’s any need. If I do, it’ll only be a quick trip out to Not as Big Sainsbury’s

I managed some really productive stuff today in the interstices between meetings and things

Just popped round to the shops once I’d finished and I’m starting to find those “feels like” temperatures a bit more convincing. It didn’t feel as bad as the -3°C the weather app is currently showing in that slot, but it was distinctly chiller than the 4° at the top
