Morning denizens

it’s a partly sunny, partly wispy day. Likely to get cloudier later though. Mild for the time of year, I think, though who knows what normal weather is nowadays: currently 16°C and aiming for 20°, with the barometers up a touch at 1007/1014mB

I slept well, possibly assisted by having changed the bed yesterday, which included switching to the two-thirds duvet. I also closed the big bedroom window, as once again it was getting very windy after nightfall and more cold air was coming in than I wanted. So I was a bit warmer than the last few nights, when I wasn’t actually cold but was on the cusp

My brother is coming back about lunchtime. The bed has been stripped and is airing. Mum's bed was done yesterday. My bed at home was stripped before I left, so I'll be making that when I get home. That'll be three beds made in two days! I would get a job as a chambermaid but I think my output would need to be much higher.

Woke at 03:50 again & read book until returning to the land of nod. Curiously the dream before waking involved working in septicland and receiving a parcel (which had been opened) that contained a pcb I'd designed somewhere else. Very odd. I wonder if it conflated the closing of the place I worked from 94 to 97, my Jonah effect finally confining that place to history. WTF I was doing in septicland is anyone's guess.

Walk (abbreviated, towpath, 3 miles) walked in the greyish gloom of the morning. Took umbrella just in case.

No Mahjong this morning as only me and one lady turned up. After walky and boring shopping ran me old lady neighbour to the doctors. Didn't realise she is almost 90, she seems very with it mentally.

Another week done!

We spent the last hour in a meeting about setting up SLOs. The SLO guys were initially talking about tradeoffs between new features and reliability, until we pointed out that this thing is going into maintenance mode at the end of the month and is definitely not getting any new features before then. So it all just devolved into setting up some monitoring so somebody gets alerted if it starts running really slowly

It did make me realise, though, that we haven’t got anything set up to notify us if it just dies. Up to now, we've relied on the fact that the users would send us a message on Teams saying “Why is it dead?”

But strictly speaking, it’s other people’s responsibility to notice that level of infrastructure failure and sort it out. They get paid to be hassled by PagerDuty; I don't

It did remind me of the fact that the BBC iPlayer people have, or had a few years ago, a thing that alerted them if iPlayer mentions on Twitter suddenly increased, as that usually meant it had fallen over

Lunch has been a bit of leftover chicken in red wine sauce

I spent most of the morning updating the documentation on getting PyCharm working with the new remote development environments, because somebody else has apparently been struggling with it and the people who are running the transition don’t know how to do it as most people use VS Code. I don’t often make detailed notes of this kind of thing but I had this time, as I figured this situation might arise. So I got it all written up and even included screenshots of every step, adorned with bright pink arrows pointing at the various bits one has to click and so on

my worst nightmare, and one reason i haven't retired completely.
pottered in the garden today. topped up lily pond with 2.5 barrels <about 1/2 tonne> of stored rainwater and generally tidied up here and there.

It sounds mean but I am very much looking forward to going home tomorrow. My Mum's behaviour is much more challenging than my last stay just a couple of months ago. It's hard to tell if she's just being wilful or if she genuinely has no memory of how to do some simple tasks.

There are layers of high, thin cloud, so enough sunshine is getting through to make it “sunny” but in a rather washed-out kind of way. It might get a bit clearer later though. It’s a mere 11°C but will soar to 19° later, with the barometers up a whisker at 1005/1013mB

Due to the delays to Viz, I have to go to Big Sainsbury’s again. I’m not sure I’ll have time for that at lunchtime so might have to put it off until tomorrow. Then again, maybe I can squeeze it in if I’m not too busy

Alaska Homestead thing S3 E4 Part I: house built of tyres. Scrap tyres. Scrap tyres now infested with insects, bats, mice, rats, racoons, though no elk so far. Built with south facing glazing, thus reaching 95 deg (I assume F, but who knows?). Maddest thing I've seen in a while, or a coon's age as the colonials are alleged to declaim on occasion. .

Tea: beans on wholemeal toast with scrambled egg. Nice enough. Entertainment: PM.
