It’s a cloudy day except for a few small patches of blue, and it’s very windy, with the trees gesticulating frantically. So the current 21°C “feels like” 17° and the high of 22° won’t last very long. It’s expected to be a relatively mild night though, not dipping below 16°. The barometers are hanging around the same general area of 1014/1015mB

I slept very well last night and woke about 10 mins before my alarm.

Today I'm off to Chelsea to see a few exhibitions at the Saatchi gallery with a friend, followed by a long lunch somewhere on the King's Road. She's packed her husband off to spend the day with his parents so it's going to be a good girlie day out.

Did better than yesterday & woke at 05:50 this morning, read book, and went back to sleep. Strange dream where the previous owners of the house wanted it back despite them having died some 20 odd and some 30 odd years ago.

Shocked: someone doesn't know who Sarah Connor is. .

Entertainment: thing about Penrhyn Castle Yng Nghymraeg on S4C. Very Gogledd Cymraeg too. Nice to know it was all built on actual slavery in Jamaica and oppressing the workers in north Wales.

Tonight’s motion picture premiere was Tornado (2025) in which a Japanese puppeteer and her father find themselves in conflict with a band of robbers in a remote part of 18th century Britain. This was utterly bleak throughout, but in a good way if you know what I mean. Well worth watching, but it’s not setting out to cheer you up, and it won’t

And then I rewatched Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024). I appreciated this much more the second time around. I understand why George Miller used the storyboards for this to get people to sign on for Mad Max: Fury Road because it’s a story one really needs to know the resolution of. Although it has plenty of mayhem and insanity in its own right, it does an excellent job of imparting an understanding of just why the mayhem and insanity shown in Mad Max: Fury Road happened, and in the way they did

Finally, the second episode of Dark Matter which is still OK in its way but… I’m not sure it’s going to grab me. It still feels like one of those things that’s worth watching if you’re going to be watching TV anyway, not something that leaves you hungry for the next episode, and then for the next series (or season)

Tea has been ribs and chips, being the mango chutney-based BBQ sauce of my own devising, but no longer with the Sainsbury’s TTD chutney as they’ve stopped making it! There’s an alternative premium mango chutney on offer which looks very similar, though not identical; I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s made by the same outfit as made the own-brand one. Anyway, it works well enough for my purposes

No Mahjong this morning as only me and one lady turned up. After walky and boring shopping ran me old lady neighbour to the doctors. Didn't realise she is almost 90, she seems very with it mentally.

I also discovered that the meat and veg do, in fact, have roughly the same spatial relationship as they previously had. I think I was confused by the way we had to travel via odd routes when parts were still partitioned off; and the drastic rearrangement of spatial relationships within fruit and veg certainly doesn’t help, particularly if you’re looking for the onions. But on further analysis, the real problems seem to be deeper in the store, where - among many more minor dislocations - the relocation of crisps and nuts, alcohol, and cleaning materials, plus the introduction of ~1.5 aisles primarily dedicated to the lunchtime Meal Deal trade, all sow confusion

The rot goes deeper, though. The tepid food counter closed down some time ago yet tepid food still appeared from somewhere, housed in a warm cabinet near the magazines. That’s moved to the end of the new Meal Deal aisle, whence I got a couple of sweet chilli chicken thighs for lunch. However, in the days of the counter, these would have been carefully placed in a paper/plastic bag, designed to keep everything in. Now, they come in a box of the kind designed more for doughnuts or cream cakes; and as a result, leak fatty juices all over your shopping

Anyway, now I’ve cleaned the shopping and bag that were thus contaminated, I suppose I should eat them while they’re still tepid

Morning denizens

it’s a partly sunny, partly wispy day. Likely to get cloudier later though. Mild for the time of year, I think, though who knows what normal weather is nowadays: currently 16°C and aiming for 20°, with the barometers up a touch at 1007/1014mB

I slept well, possibly assisted by having changed the bed yesterday, which included switching to the two-thirds duvet. I also closed the big bedroom window, as once again it was getting very windy after nightfall and more cold air was coming in than I wanted. So I was a bit warmer than the last few nights, when I wasn’t actually cold but was on the cusp

My brother is coming back about lunchtime. The bed has been stripped and is airing. Mum's bed was done yesterday. My bed at home was stripped before I left, so I'll be making that when I get home. That'll be three beds made in two days! I would get a job as a chambermaid but I think my output would need to be much higher.

Woke at 03:50 again & read book until returning to the land of nod. Curiously the dream before waking involved working in septicland and receiving a parcel (which had been opened) that contained a pcb I'd designed somewhere else. Very odd. I wonder if it conflated the closing of the place I worked from 94 to 97, my Jonah effect finally confining that place to history. WTF I was doing in septicland is anyone's guess.

Walk (abbreviated, towpath, 3 miles) walked in the greyish gloom of the morning. Took umbrella just in case.

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: The food programme. Pellagra for the win!

More gardening, as in bramble massacre: some of those feckers were so thick they needed a lopper.

Alaska Homestead thing: part II of The Tyre House. In Amish country, Ohio. Odd that no one pointed out that cob needs to be kept dry. Installed guttering. WTAF the internal garden thing was about is beyond me. Drilled a well and found 50 gal/minute. Well there's a thing.

Alaska Homestead thing: 5 acre (as little as that? WTF?) homestead in Rainier, Oregon, quite close to where Mt St Helens blew its top: salt water ingress into the aquifer: solar powered still, construct a dew pond, create a garden that needs less water. The dew pond seemed to hold water ok when tested. The still sort of worked but needed to be about 10 times bigger to get anything worthwhile out of it. Then they found an old well that had water in it and proved to be drinkable. Goats installed. Low water garden worked.

Gosh. Just found a post from 15th June 2008 by Richard Cranium, a missing member of the congregation for some time, regarding the state of The Neath Canal. Apparently he was impressed by the replacement of the lock gates at Tonnau, which operated sufficiently to allow the sight seeing boat to reach the upper reach of the canal.

It'd be hard pressed to do so these days since there's at least 40 trees in the canal between Calor Gas and Morrisons these days, and not enough water to float a canoe in many places.
