It’s Viz week so I need to go to Big Sainsbury’s. Therefore, I won’t be rushing out to do the shopping at lunchtime, but will do it tomorrow instead. Might go to M&S too while I’m over there

Tonight’s book has been Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler, based on a recommendation from somebody on Bluesky. It’s set in a small community near LA starting around 2024, where society is crumbling from the effects of climate change and the greed of the super wealthy, so quite far fetched… oh, wait

They rather glossed over the fact that the police, acting on information received, discovered crucial new evidence in the family home, which was the scene of the crime, halfway through the second trial. Why hadn’t they found it before then, despite at least two supposedly thorough searches of the property? Who can say

The surgery finally contacted me about my request to discuss the side effects of this stuff with a pharmacist, made through the form on their website. They explained that I shouldn’t have used the form on their website as they don’t monitor it; I ought to have phoned, in case it was urgent. I would have asked the obvious question, but I was trying to get some work finished off and also very tired because of the side effects, so I didn’t bother getting into it

Anyway, a pharmacist will phone me on Friday afternoon. Hope it isn’t urgent

Pork pie for lunch

This morning was all meetings: show & tell, followed by our sprint retrospective. But this project is now winding down as the data work I just finished was really the last big bit. So we were able to combine the retro with planning for the next sprint, and indeed for the transition to maintenance mode. As I’m off next week, there’ll be one more sprint after this, assuming nothing comes up from the data analysts or the stakeholders. So until mid-August, I’ll just be pottering around dealing with any odd bits of tech debt that it would be nice to have sorted out before the end, if all goes well

After that, it sounds like I’ll be moving on to work on features for some other services that fall into the category of “nice to have” but don’t fit into the main flow of work for the relevant team. This means there should be a bit of variety and also less of the boring maintenance stuff

TIL: the new Prime Minister actively dislikes “roadmaps” and the like, preferring a narrative approach along the lines of “Here’s a problem these people had, and this is what we did/are doing to fix it.” I don’t suppose this will affect me in any way, but I gather the civil servants who communicate things upwards are all now preparing to start reframing things to suit

Classic Movies: The Lion in Winter which led me to look up Henry I, Matilda, Stephen, and Henry II. Them were the days, Norman bastard immigrants. Even worse than the fecking Saes.

Next door was busy strimming the bottom of their garden. Wonders will never cease. Must have done about an 10 foot square patch, so there's a fair amount more to go. . Naturally enough it wasn't the idle bastard doing it.

Minor potching in the garden until the horse flies found me & I came back in. .

Entertainment: Jack Hargreaves Old Country: deer hide. taking rabbits with ferrets.

Tea: Tesco battered haddock etc. Nice enough.

Some mackerel sky out, along with some slightly thicker cloud, meaning it’s not quite sunny and probably won’t be. It’s 16°C and intends to get to 25°, with the barometers down to 1015/1023mB. It was getting quite breezy last night, but this has dropped off a bit

Tonight’s viewing was Murder 24/7 on iPlayer, about a bloke who stabbed his wife. Well, he insists he didn’t, and it’s a two-parter so that’s as far as they’d got; but he blew it right at the start of his interview by giving an account that was completely different in every respect to what he’d said when he dialled 999, and had then said again to the first police officers to arrive on the scene, recorded by their bodycams. I mean, it wasn’t just a few details, it was every single thing!

I wonder if the department will have the same name in the morning? Last time, we had to wait a few days for the Cabinet Office to decide what the acronym should be, so there’s still a chance they might change it to something snappier
