    I would have thought back up generators only keep safety critical systems going.

    Indeed, and then as ever, people will start with "We need complete redundancy" and when presented with the bill, soon start to realise that a sensible middle ground is in order.

    Not really sure what people are expecting here - you're talking about power requirements equivalent to a town, there's only so much redundancy that you can realistically have when it comes to keeping an entire airport operational.

    There's a world of difference between safety critical redundancy, and a level of redundancy which allows normal operation when a huge piece of electrical infra goes down.

    There are huge, critical, substations all over the grid - it would be completely impractical, and unreasonable, to try and duplicate them all along with their supply and distribution networks for one off, major, events like this
