    He grew up in the south of Ethiopia which wasn't really badly affected by the famine, but many hundreds of thousands of people died and it would have been a lot more if Band Aid hadn't guilt-tripped world governments into helping out. IIRC the song was put together in a matter of hours so if some of the lyrics now seem a bit odd, that's a small price to pay when you consider how it helped his country.
