If its daily commute agreed with the contract then fine but if they want me to go on a trip to America / Spain / France then they pay the air fare & hotel just as they would if I was a big consultancy.
But as you say its an agent getting his 10%

He's an agent.
He wants everyone to include expenses in day rates because he doesn't get his 10% on expenses, he only gets it on the day rate.
Simple as that. A self-serving agent who has no care for understanding business relationships.

If I got the gist of it right, he was even saying if you had to do a load of foreign travel (which might not be 100% predictable before the assignment starts), you should factor that into your day rate and never claim any expenses? Even if that's thousands of pounds.
