And renaming the Brecon Beacons as Bannau Brycheiniog just to confuse the SAS.

Why are you speaking as if the EU said 'We support Argentina's claim'. They didn't, Argentina asked for the Spanish version of the name to be used as well and either the EU didn't notice or didn't appreciate it's impact. Irony being 'Falkland Islands' in Catalan is 'illes malvines'.

Ok from now lets quote Catalonia's right to independence etc. That is not that much of a big deal but it lead to beatings from the Spanish recently and approval from the EU.

The Falklands were settled over 40 years ago when the Islanders clearly stated their preference, allowing the Argentinians to continue their aggressive fantasy is as appropriate as the British suggesting they should take back Israel, Africa & India, someone should have a word with the deluded dolts! The EU are perfectly placed the UN have already ruled on it.

Can we ask that from now on that the EU support 'British Israel', 'British India', 'Rhodesia' etc? It's only fair!

I don't think it's actually a big deal, stating both names is common, UN and the US both do it. I don't think it provides any indication of EU members stance on Falklands.

What is stupid is the EU not realising what Argentina were going to do with this, it was obvious they would spin it and it's a failure of EU diplomacy skills to not see it coming. The reason there is so much talking and lawyers and advisers with diplomacy is to prevent this kind of blunder.

Yeah it is a massive screw up.

The Falkland Islanders held a referendum in 2013 and want to remain a self-governing British overseas territory.

Unfortunately Argentina and others in the region don't recognise the Falkland Islanders rights to self-determination, which is a breach of a UN resolution on peoples right to self determination. While Argentina wants the Falkland Islands other countries don't want Britain's military in the area.

hey if the Falkland Islanders want to become Argentinean then we would probably happily pay for the vote. Though currently they have even less chance of voting leave than Scotland. After the EU started getting involved they have probably scared the crop out other marginal states.
